The new National Geographic Treasury of Greek Mythology offers timeless stories of Greek myths in a beautiful new volume. Brought to life with lyrical text by award-winning author Donna Jo Napoli and stunning artwork by award-winning illustrator Christina Balit, the tales of gods and goddesses such as Zeus, Aphrodite, Apollo, and Athena and heroes and monsters such as Helen of Troy, Perseus, and Medusa will fascinate and engage children’s imaginations.
National Geographic completes the book with embellishments of each story: sidebars for each god, goddess, hero, and monster link the myths to constellations, geography, history, and culture to help young readers connect the stories to real life events, people, and places. A family tree and a “cast of characters” profile page help make relationships between the characters clear, and a mapping feature adds to the fun and fascination. Resource notes and ample back matter directing readers to more information round out this luminous book. Sure to dazzle all those intrigued with the fantastic tales of Greek mythology and enchant new readers, this vibrant book will soon become a family keepsake.

My children (ages 7 and 9) have been fascinated by the artwork, intrigued by the hidden details (the planet symbols corresponding to the gods are cleverly included in many of the paintings) and interested in the information about the constellations (in an additional section at the back of the book). However, due to some of the sensual, derogatory and violent language, I've decided this book needs to be shelved until my children are older - if I don't remove the book all together. And I fully realize that the gods in Greek mythology are frequently immoral, selfish and vicious, and it's difficult to write with a sensitivity appropriate for children; however, Treasury of Greek Mythology treats these godly attributes with a little too much detail for my taste. Here are a few examples: "Life really started for Hera when she put on... It is a bit of a disappointment in the way it is written. It says it is for middle school or young adult. I would say more like mid to late elementary. For the later group it is well written and the pictures are great. For the intended group, not so much. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful Greek mythology brought to life with amazing colored drawings, and lyrical text, Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Treasury of Greek Mythology: Classic Stories of Gods, Goddesses, Heroes & Monsters (Hardcover) *****"This is a book meant to dazzle its readers-And it does." New York Times The new National Geographic Treasury of Greek Mythology, got the "School Library Journal Best Books of 2011, is 2012 Notable Children's Books! Astonishingly, it did not dazzle me, a retired reviewer, it enthralled my being, it captivated me. For three years, since Noah, my grandson was four, I started the search for those dreamland books which mesmerized me, since I was four, before learning to read, its magical drawings recounted it all. Greek mythology was Jacobs ladder for me, even early on I just enjoyed the troubadourary, it opened magical worlds filled with stories of courage, bravery, war, deceit, revenge and love. Just recently I encountered a mother and grandie, a mathematician and linguist with a Ph D that whose love for mythology is greater than mine. Her seventy books on folklore and fairy tales prove it. Helen of Troy, Brought to life with amazing... Read more |
