We had read the original Little Red Riding Hood story and this was an interesting take, told from the Wolf's perspective.Here, the Big Bad Wolf claims that he is a vegetarian (pictured eating a salad at the beginning of the story). However, he has run out of food and when Red Riding Hood comes along, he pictures her as a juicy red apple, ready to be devoured. It is a bit of a stretch here in terms of portraying the wolf as a vegetarian who then goes after Red Riding Hood, but the apple-theme runs strongly throughout the story and I was eventually convinced that the food-deprived wolf was so desperate that he imagined both Red and her grandma as different kinds of delicious apples, meant for his consumption. My daughter was a bit puzzled at first (but he's a vegetarian wolf!), but went along with this twist in the plot... First I will give you his thoughts. "I like the pictures a lot, especially the wolf. I love the pictures of the wolf! It was a funny book. The wolf loves apples and knows all the kinds. I think Red Riding Hood should have taken some apples with her to give him. I think when we hike we should take apples. If Red Riding Hood and Granny gave the wolf something to eat instead of thinking of themselves maybe he would not have eaten them."My grandson is autistic. He knows a lot about being able to name all the types of things that interest him. So that the wolf could name the apples was no surprise. He had no problem relating to that. He reads a lot so he was able to sit through it. I liked the story myself. I thought it was a very cute picture book. The illustrations were awesome. Even though the wolf eats Granny and Red Riding Hood my grandson did not get scared. He was able to understand the wolf only ate them because he had nothing... As a librarian I have read it to children in small groups, big groups, junior book clubs and school classes. What needs to be understood is this book is not meant to 'teach a lesson' or have a 'moral'. It is meant to be read aloud with expression to children of an age to understand its tongue in cheek nature and the quirkiness of the story. It really is not a 'retelling' of the original Little Red Riding Hood story nor should it be taken the least bit seriously. Enjoy for the book for what it is meant to be, fun and funny! |
