tale tales for kids review

Product Description

History isn't always made by great armies colliding or by great civilizations rising or falling. Sometimes it's made when a chauffeur takes a wrong turn, a scientist forgets to clean up his lab, or a drunken soldier gets a bit rowdy. That's the kind of history you'll find in The Greatest Stories Never Told.

This is history candy -- the good stuff. Here are 100 tales to astonish, bewilder, and stupefy: more than two thousand years of history filled with courage, cowardice, hope, triumph, sex, intrigue, folly, humor, and ambition. It's a historical delight and a visual feast with hundreds of photographs, drawings, and maps that bring each story to life. A new discovery waits on every page: stories that changed the course of history and stories that affected what you had for breakfast this morning.

Consider:

  • The Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock because they ran out of beer
  • Some Roman officials were so corrupt that they actually stole time itself
  • Three cigars changed the course of the Civil War
  • The Scottish kilt was invented by an Englishman

Based on the popular Timelab 2000® history minutes hosted by Sam Waterston on The History Channel®, this collection of fascinating historical tidbits will have you shaking your head in wonder and disbelief. But they're all true. And you'll soon find yourself telling them to your friends.

Beyer is an author who is dedicated to making history interesting and fun, which he does so well in this collection of one page stories. I found the book especially interesting because of the background work the author had put into his research (the imprint of the History Channel did not hurt either) which raised these tidbits above the normal trivia, or potential urban legends. Beyer highlights some things that should not be lost in the mists of history, and points out historical facts that may be glossed over in many other history books. There is nothing earth shattering here, but more than a few will make you scratch your head, or share with others in conversation. A great book for dipping your toe in history - each story is about a page of text and is well illustrated. There is just enough to get you the interesting point without boring you. It's a truly fun and fascinating book.

This is not a coffee-table book, it's a briefcase book, a bathroom book, a bedside book, a stuck-in-traffic book. It's a book for dads and kids, a book for teachers and students, a book for priests and ministers (great sermon material!), and a great gift for practically everyone. My personal favorite involves what Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp were doing during the 1920s--I won't give away the story but Wyatt was in Hollywood and Bat was in Manhattan! It's clear that the author is not a student of history, he's a lover of history, and the enthusiasm and excitement with which he approaches his subject comes through on every page.

I always hated history in school -- and I hardly ever watch the History Channel -- so I approached this book with great trepidation. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself paging eagerly through the well-written, highly entertaining historical vignettes (each one takes up a mere two pages, perfect for subway reading). Some of them made me laugh out loud; once I had to fight the urge to turn to the stranger next to me and ask if he knew what had killed Atilla the Hun. (I'm not telling.) Although not written for kids particularly, this is also a great book to share with older children . . . especially those who complain that history is dull.

    Product Description

The best story is one that comes from the heart The library is having a contest for the best story, and the quirky narrator of this story just has to win that rollercoaster ride with her favorite author! But what makes a story the best?

Her brother Tim says the best stories have lots of action. Her father thinks the best stories are the funniest. And Aunt Jane tells her the best stories have to make people cry. A story that does all these things doesn?t seem quite right, though, and the one thing the whole family can agree on is that the best story has to be your own.

Anne Wilsdorf?s hilarious illustrations perfectly capture this colorful family and their outrageous stories in Eileen Spinelli?s heartfelt tale about creativity and finding your own voice.

Eileen Spinelli, a master of capturing the poignant moments in children's lives has done it again with, The Best Story. The girl, seeking the advice of all family members, is writing a story to submit to The Red Brick Library story contest. None of the advice produces the story she can believe in until her mother suggests that, the best story, is one that comes from your heart. The author doesn't name the girl, nor give us the results of the contest which makes us think about what is important in life.

When we first saw this book at the library this week, the author's name did not sound familiar to me. After reading The Best Story, we will definitely be on the lookout for more Eileen Spinelli books! The Best Story is a tale of a young girl who wants to enter a story writing contest at her local library. She goes home determined to write a fabulous story and win the grand prize. This book is about her realization that all the help she tries to get from her family members does not help her create a fabulous story. In fact, only when her mother says, "I think the best story is one that comes from the heart. Your own heart." does she realize the true purpose of creating a story of her own. I love the fact that the author never says whether the girl wins the contest or not. Because that's not the point! The point is that she created a work of art from within.

My daughter loves to write and illustrate her own books. I enjoy reading them, because I know that even though they may... Read more

Eileen Spinelli does herself proud in this wonderful little story about a girl who has to write and essay and is not sure what to write. This is a great read aloud for children who are learning to write narratives.

Descriptions about Unlikely Friendships: 47 Remarkable Stories from the Animal Kingdom :

        Product Description

Written by National Geographic magazine writer Jennifer Holland, Unlikely Friendships documents one heartwarming tale after another of animals who, with nothing else in common, bond in the most unexpected ways. A cat and a bird. A mare and a fawn. An elephant and a sheep. A snake and a hamster. The well-documented stories of Koko the gorilla and All Ball the kitten; and the hippo Owen and the tortoise Mzee. And almost inexplicable stories of predators befriending prey—an Indian leopard slips into a village every night to sleep with a calf. A lionness mothers a baby oryx.

It is exactly like Isaiah 11:6: The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid . . . ”

Ms. Holland narrates the details and arc of each story, and also offers insights into why—how the young leopard, probably motherless, sought maternal comfort with the calf, and how a baby oryx inspired the same mothering instinct in the lionness. Or, in the story of Kizzy, a nervous retired Greyhound, and Murphy, a red tabby, how cats and dogs actually understand each other’s body language. With Murphy’s friendship and support, Kizzy recovered from life as a racing dog and became a confident, loyal family pet.

These are the most amazing friendships between species, collected from around the world and documented in a selection of full-color candid photographs.

This book is a little treasure! It's sweet and charming while being interesting and informative. In addition to my own copy, I'm buying more copies for friends and family members, of all ages. The reaction from people who viewed it so far is extremely enthusiastic, so I'll no doubt end up ordering even more. I am even already hoping there will be a sequel, or at least something along these lines.

Or perhaps read someone else to sleep. Not that the book is soporific or anything. It's just a nice friendly happy read. Something that will bring a smile to your face, a warm feeling to your heart and sweet dreams instead of nitemares.

Some very interesting animal combos in this book including a cat and his buddy the rat, and a leopard who lieth down with a cow. And, another "friends who are natural enemies" tale- a lap dog and a squirrel!

Penned by Jennifer Holland, a well known writer for National Geographic. Truly fabulous and "aaahhh" producing photos, too.
